Davis-Hawn's mill facility includes a high level of experience with all types of millwork equipment and tools necessary for straight-line ripping, gang ripping, resawing, planing, sanding, band-sawing, shaping and manufacturing of straight and radius hardwood mouldings. With the addition of our state-of-the-art CNC router, CAD system and Weinig moulding system, Davis-Hawn has greatly expanded its capabilities of manufacturing extremely high quality custom hardwood mouldings. With this German-engineered Weinig system, we are able to produce the finest in architectural mouldings to our customers’ exact specifications - comparable to any of the largest production millwork operations. Our mill’s continual focus is to provide the highest quality mouldings, quick turn-around times and competitive pricing.
In the hands of our experienced craftsmen, our Weinig Rondomat 934 grinds the razor sharp knives in the moulder heads. In the millshop, these heads are mounted and calibrated in our 5 head Weinig P23 moulder, our Mikron 645 or our 4-head XL moulder (for flooring, siding and ceiling patterns). With careful attention to quality control, we run our moulders at slower infeed rates to maximize the knife cuts per inch. The result is quality assurance for our discriminating high-end customers and extremely crisp, smooth mouldings, meeting or exceeding the AWI Custom Grade standards.
Davis-Hawn mouldings are made from kiln-dried hardwood lumber. Our standard paint grade material for mouldings is poplar, a fine grained wood that is very workable. Pattern stock (siding and ceilings) is typically run from Southern Pine, knotty Ponderosa Pine, mixed or vertical-grain Douglas Fir, or select or pecky Cypress, depending on the application and desired look and finish.
We have an extensive in-house knife collection capable of producing over 1,000 different standard and custom moulding profiles. All profiles illustrated in our catalog are from in the Davis-Hawn knife inventory, and there is no knife charge when using these profiles. For remodels or preservation projects where authenticity is demanded, we can match any sample profile in the specified hardwood, up to 4" thick and 12" wide. When matching or creating new custom mouldings, a CAD program and small CNC router produce precise templates for grinding knives to the exact profile desired.
